    Downsizing

We only have a few weeks left before departure.  The past few days have been so busy and hectic.  Selling all our worldly possessions is beginning to feel like a sucky second job.  And trying to give the remaining crap away is even harder.  Months ago we moved from our little suburban house into a one bedroom loft apartment in order to save money for our trip.  At the time we did some considerable downsizing of our possessions.  We got rid of everything expendable and kept only the necessary items we would need for day to day life.  I thought for sure we were living a pretty minimalist lifestyle, but I’m amazed at the amount of things we still have.  Some items make me wonder how they even made it to the apartment.

For example:  We’ve lived in an apartment for 5 months now, but I still have my old wood chopping axe.  We don’t even have a fire place anymore.  “Why did I decide to bring this to the apartment?” Clearly there were some flaws in our last downsizing plans.  I have to admit though, it is quite comforting to know I have it handy in the event our apartment should ever have a security breach.  An axe doesn’t carry all the legal burdens of owning a gun, and still its somehow much more terrifying.  Insanely, maniacally, terrifying.  Also, its a really nice axe.  On second thought, I think I’ll keep it.

But that’s just one example of the many weird, random things that you find sitting in some dark closet or under the bed of your apartment.  Go ahead and take a look around your own apartment.  I bet you can find much weirder and out of place things.  And if you do, email me and let me know what it is.  I never get any interesting emails.

While I’m on the topic of odd things…I went to the doctor today.  It was my last check-up in my rounds of final dental exam, eye exam, & physical exams before I leave my job and medical insurance behind. (“Its all up to you now, Jesus“)

Every time I go to the doctor they are always trying to push some new pill on me.  Not a prescription.  Just the latest, greatest cure-all pill that is new to the market (ie. Teamocil).  I usually leave the doctor’s office with at least one or two pamphlets on some new medicine that I have no intention of getting (and I don’t really need).  And like always these new medicines usually come with a long list of side effects that are usually even more discomforting than whatever it is that needs treating.

The pamphlet for the ‘Wonder Drug” I got today was particularly memorable.  I don’t recall the name or what it treated, but one side effect in particular caught my eye.  The list started out pretty typical:

Side effects may include vomiting, nausea, headaches, gas…etc. etc. etc.  And then at the bottom of the list “weird dreams”.  I’ve never seen weird dreams listed as a side effect for a prescription pill.  Aren’t most dreams weird anyways.  I mean 90% of dream retellings begin with, “Man, I had the weirdest dream last night.”   Just how weird do the dreams have to be in order to qualify as a side effect to a drug.  Or maybe “weird dreams” is just the pharmaceutical buzz word for “trippin’”.  I wish I had the resources and ambition of an investigative reporter.  I would like to know more about the weird dreams their test subjects experienced.  In the mean time if I want something that will give me vomiting, nausea, headaches, gas, and weird dreams, we have a liquor store right down the street.

Hey Aly! You and John did such an amazing job creating this website! I am psyched about your upcoming adventure:-) Speaking of odd things, I have so many of them that I accumulated without knowing over the years. Mainly because I am one of the few Japanese people who are unfortunately (?) stuck in Hattiesburg and have received so much *stuff* from old friends who happened to be lucky enough to leave this town, including you two! LOL We still use your old pots and pans, dishes, etc and so on! To name a few, our microwave was donated by our loving friend Emi san, some of the books on the bookshelf used to belong to Tae san, and I was recently given a few more items by Aya san as well! Ryuhei ended up leaving us a baseball bat, which we never use but still own it anyway. But the bat is put up right next to the door for a security reason. LOL I keep anything give to me by my beloved friends and I am unable to get rid of them. I feel that it would be bad karma since all those items remind me of good old memories of those who used to be here!

Hey, Aly! I really enjoyed your journal! I added this blog to my favorite already! Well, I just moved into a new place with my husband a few weeks ago, and tried to downsizing as well. I also felt the same way as you did... Why do I keep all these useless things?! Then we made a rule which we called "one year rule". It is simple! If the thing has never been used last one year, it should be throw away! Actually, it worked really well! So try this rule next time!!!
